  • 0.0.1 Beliefs Clarify Value Choices

Version 1.2 November 2016                         Previous Version

To work out what is a Reasonable Global Way of life we need to:

    1.   Form reasonable beliefs about the world.  These clarify our options: what choices we have.

    2.   Choose reasonable values.  The ongoing choices we make reflect our values.

    3.   Be true to this path.  We all sometimes – or often – fail to live up to our own ideals.  But we can be part of the struggle for what is good and right.

What can we learn from philosophy, science & history?

What insights do we get from religion, culture, the arts & the media?

We go through these domains to work out reasonable beliefs.

Our beliefs clarify the choices we make to conduct our lives.

Our choices reflect our values and enable us to address critical global and personal issues.

These global beliefs and values lead us to understand what is a Reasonable Global Way of life.  more

There is no book or web site that presents a comprehensive vision of what reasonable people can believe, or use as working hypotheses, to guide their daily choices and major decisions, on personal and political levels.  Academics are generally qualified in a limited area and open to being severely criticised if they comment outside their speciality.  Non-academics seem to focus on pet theories or traditional religious beliefs.  National leaders are too parochial to take a global view.  These pages are a bold attempt to fill that gap.  more

What reasonable values do we find by following this path?  See next page.

    Different Choices: Different Values

    ●    Others look at the same ‘facts’ but make different choices.  With the same apparent beliefs about the world some people adopt different values.

    ●   But most people adopt different values because they understand the world differently.

    ●   In a pluralist society we embrace difference and diversity because it can lead to enriching our own lives.

    ●   We can look for and debate each other’s underlying motivations.  Nearly all of us share the core values of truth and compassion.

    ●   We can fight ignorance with education, and selfishness with the law.

    ●   We can accommodate many differences.

    ●   We must resist those who seek to impose their views by force and restrict our freedom to pursue the truth.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of Country, throughout all colonised lands, and their connections to land, waters and community. We pay respect by giving voice to truth, values and social justice, acknowledging our shared history, and valuing the cultures of first nations peoples.
