1.5.8.6 Love and Compassion in SocietyVersion 1.0 October 2022                            (Previous Version) To emphasize the normality and reasonableness of choosing Love as a core value we provide examples from a traditional eastern religion, Buddhism, and a traditional western religion, Christianity. The primary goal in Buddhism is to achieve enlightenment, which entails losing our attachment to illusory ideas, hence overcoming suffering and escaping from the cycle of death and rebirth. A key technique Buddhists promote is to practice Compassion, which we say is another word for Love. The primary goal in Christianity is to achieve communion with God, traditionally by repenting our sins. Jesus said the prime commandment is to love god and love our neighbour. The Pope (which one?) suggested the core values of Christianity are Truth and Love, and who could argue with that? Well we think there is more involved! Saint Paul (not Jesus) said “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). For society as a whole Love mane be the greatest. For an individual the greatest is Hope: in desperate times it is hope that keeps us alive and going. Abu Huraira reported Mohammed said: “You will not enter paradise until you have faith, and you will not have faith until you love each other”  (Sahih Muslim 54) As well as religion, some secular leaders also promote Love as a core value.  We need to insert some links to the literature here. 1.5.8.6 Many traditional world religions promote Love as a major ethical principle, but many of them at the same time prescribe, or allow, different treatment of people according to their different social status, which is not truly loving.            Leaders in the secular world also promote Love. it's not strange or uniquely religious.
