  • 1.5.8.8 Love is Not Enough

Version 1.0 October 2022                             (Previous Version)

We need to be clear, given the above, that while valuing love is essential to the good life, it is not on its own enough.  We acknowledge that ethical judgements are based on outcomes as well as intent.

We are obliged, if we value love, to pursue the Truth, to discern the relevant aspects of Reality, and allow for a Diversity of informed opinions, so that we become more aware of the expected outcomes of our ethical choices.  We want to avoid being in the position of saying “I loved her, I didn’t mean to hurt her!”  Valuing Equality and Diversity means we must allow others, who are competent, to make their own choices, rather than imposing our ideas of what is best for others.

To avoid harming others we need self-discipline, to avoid aggressive or controlling anger, to prevent our pride, greed, lust, envy, jealousy or sloth (the ‘seven deadly sins’) from causing harm.  We need to value Equality (addressed in the next section) and Responsibility (addressed in 1.5.10) as well as Love.

1.5.8.8  Love alone is not enough to be the foundation of our ethical guidelines.  It must be balanced by the core ethical values of Life, Equality and Responsibility, and informed because of the core values of Truth, Diversity and Realitymore
